Only recently discovered this talented and inspiring writer. And check out 'Slow Train to Guantanamo'. a really excellent book about Cuba.by the same author. He writes with a passion for travel that we can relate to,and is fully aware of the history and customs of the places he visits. He certainly does his homework and is enlightening and amusing in his encounters with America. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a well crafted travel story and especially if you are planning to visit the Deep South.
As someone who has lately fallen in love with holidaying in the USA and has gorged themselves on US travel books, I cant recommend this title enough. The author's descriptions are so vivid, he makes you feel as if you're making the trip, rather than him. It also has that rare ability to make the reader laugh out loud, something travel books don't tend to do in abundance. Like any holiday-maker who doesn't want their trip to end, I don't want this book to end. In fact this book inspired me to book a train trip from San Francisco to Detroit for July next. If this book doesn't make you want to get on a train, plane or make you feel as if you've done this trip, I'LL give you your money back!
