Warm, compelling and well researched. The book provides a lot of details on a previously undercovered subject

I would recommend this book if you are extremely interested in African football. For the general football enthusiast I found it somewhat hard going with more of a scholarly style and level of detail than I was expecting.

The chapters do not follow on from each other and should be seen as short stories/articles. Each chapter lacks a coherent theme which, added to the detail and style, does make for a heavy read. It feels less of a book and more of a collection. It is very difficult to get a sense of "The Story of African Football" as proclaimed on the front cover.

There are some great insights into African football but this is a book for a dedicated reader.

I could not read this book in oen go, but as somehting that sits on the shelf in our cloakroom, I can see many a studious male taking it down and spending a few minutes reading about Eto, or the Cameroon squad of the 90's. SImilarly the element which covers apartheid and lambasts the system which segregated those who had natural talent and who were not allowed to dislay it unless they masked their origin was incredible. It's oe o fhtos ewhich is great for 10 to 15 minutes, read a chapter and put it away until next time.

Very good for men like me - it sits next to a Jeremy Clarkson book which again is geat in pieces!

I'm not normally a football fan, i chose this book because it peaked my curiosity. However i found this book to be very good, giving an insight into africa that i would not have otherwise even considered. It covers loads of information, events, stories and other bits and bobs. At times i thought 'ok, so what?', or found that it gave a teaser to something better than abruptly changed the subject to another topic.

If you are an avid football fan then i would recommend this, it is a good light read, and no doubt you will get considerably more out of it than i.
