Pre-war football is often dismissed as something out of the dark ages yet, as Mark and Paul's book makes clear, Sunderland were one of the powerhouse teams of the Edwardian era. Attracting huge crowds and with a reputation as one of the finest sides to ever don the red and white stripes, the Sunderland team of 1912/13 very nearly became the first team to do the league and cup in the 20th century, 59 years before Tottenham Hotspur famously pulled it off.
Mark and Paul's book is a fine epitaph to this bittersweet season just a few years before the outbreak of WWI. Most of the players featured went on to serve their country in that bitter conflict, a few making the ultimate sacrifice - making their acheivements in this hallowed season all the more poignant.
