Richard Holloway can be relied on to be stimulating, indeed often controversial, as well as informative. This book can be recommended to anyone, whether a believer or not (as is well known, Holloway has had a foot in both camps). It shows how the Bible is as relevant today as it ever was, not by reading it literally, of course, or necessarily with the committed eyes of faith, but by seeing it as a document, or rather collection of documents, that offers unrivalled insights into what it means to be human (which is of course inseparable from developing concepts of God through historical time).

I found this book extremely hard to read and at times complicated the bible. The author is well known and respected, But I feel that was the biggest let down. I did learn some things about the bible and feel that if you are seeking general knowledge about the subject that will give you quotations then this is your book
