As a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, an FIA competition licence holder, and an owner and long time mechanic of 4 3 series BMWs at present I thought this book would give me an insight into the M series cars.
I was very disappointed with this book. This book is written by a motoring journalist, and is no more than a sequence of typical motoring journalist reviews, although with quite a comprehensive history of the BMW M Marque. It might appeal to a general reader, but not so much to anyone interested in technical design and detail. It promises full specs, but does not even list vehicle weights. There are lots of photos, but unfortunately there is not a single drawing. Not of an engine, gearbox, suspension system or anything. It promises details of design, development and technical innovations. It mentions such features as VANOS, Motronic systems etc. in passing, but there is nothing about how and why they work or of their development.
Lastly, the book was first published in 1992, and this edition printed in 2000 only contains a meagre addendum about cars produced since the original publication, and in particuler the M50 series engines.
this book is excellent. It starts right down from th m1 to the m5. It contains excellent photos and interesting facts about all the cars. It even mentions racing vehicles. It tells you all the technical information about the cars. Its an excellent book. Get it, FAST!
