Leonard Ashley obviously knows his stuff, and this book contains a wealth of information on demons, exorcism and demonic practitioners. However the bitty style I found to be frustrating. Sometimes it is just lists of names, sometimes origins of words, sometimes exorcism rituals. I would just get interested in one thing, and the book would swiftly move to the next. Sections are rarely more than a page long, and at times the book refers to things without really explaining them, or stories without telling them. The style is American, quite chatty and fast-moving.
If you want breadth rather than depth then this book is for you. It gives lots of facts, a range of sources for further reading, and has some excellent black and white pictures. Personally I felt this book did little more than skim the surface, with tantalising glimpses of the richness and complexity of the subject, of which the author is evidently aware. A good introduction, and a good book for browsing in your spare moments.

An amazingly interesting history of evil covering everything from exorcism to pixies. Leonard R.N. Ashley succeeds in sustaining the readers interest by delivering hundreds of short punchy titbits of information, some chapters being only a couple of lines long, meaning you can pick it up and thumb through it, whenever you have a few minutes to spare. Particularly interesting, are the details of how various religions adopted their enemies gods to become their demons, and a list of the 103 angels who fell from heaven with Satan. All in all, a very well researched, thoughtprovoking book on a thoroughly interesting subject.

Demonology has always fascinated me and this is a good book with wich to explore the subject. You'll find much, not just about demons and devils but also angels, ancient gods, witches and faeries. There are also short biographies on many famous and infamous characters connected with the subject. A well written and well researched book.
