A Nice Book for the Collector
on 6 December 2007
People who collect things, as I do, also usually collect a number of books on the subject they have chosen to collect and this book would be a good addition to the collector of paperweights. It is well written and well produced. The photographs are very good and there is a fair representation of paperweights from the different factories who produced these wonderful little works of art.
Personally I could have wished for a few more of the weights from the English factories, Whitefriars, Bachus and also the addition of some of the Yorkshire factories, Kilner's of Wakefield etc. that produced the Dumps. None of these factories are with us any longer, although the Whitefriars name continues under the Caithness banner. The Strathearn and Perthshire factories, sadly no longer with us and more of their weights would have been a bonus.
However that is just my personal opinion and the book does show some beautiful examples of the art of the glass maker. Covering the French factories of Clichy, St. Louis and Baccarat. Sadly many of the weights from these factories are now well beyond the price range of the average collector. All told the book gives a balanced look at paperweights from all over the world and is well worth buying.
