This is the book that accompnied the 2006-2007 exhibition of Velazquez work at the National Gallery. As an admirer of Velazquez I have been very fortunate in being able to have seen much of his work and the places where he painted. With texts written by some of the worlds leading experts and beautifully illustrated with both full coloured plates of not only his major works but with colour photographs of some of the important details within the paintings. Up to the usual Nat. Gallery standards even as a paperback it would grace most bookshelves.

Personally I found the exhibition quite electrifying. Some of the canvases, particularly the religious ones, sent a real chill up my spine. The book contains very informative and accessible scholarly essays on subjects ranging from Velazquez's life to the more specialized and local topic of the history of British acquisition of his works. As a catalogue it is not only very full - each work has a detailed provenance and commentary which manages to balance description with pondering, all the paintings are reproduced nice and large. As far as my limited experience is concerned, this defies convention! So forget the postcards and get this if you liked as many of the paintings you saw as I do.
