A powerful account of a woman vilified by so many but who was an unsung heroine and an angel of mercy for thousands of women denied access to reproductive healthcare in the repressive theocratic Ireland of the time and left with nowhere to turn for help in a situation which for so many was that of literally life-threatening pregnancy. This an expertly researched account of a woman who, far from the imagine of "backstreet" practitioner was a highly qualified midwife whose skills were much sought after where the medical establishment of the time, under pressure of the ideological influence of a theocracy which considered women expendable, washed their hands of women (married and unmarried ) in medical scenarious where furture pregnancies would prove fatal. He caputured her story and the story of women she treated within the all-important historical social context of the time with all its relevance and reality.
