Ihave always been fascinated with the amazing careeer of Charles XII of Sweden and was pleased to see this book back in print. It is a touch dated now. I took it with me to the battlefield in Ukraine and found it as a guide reasonably useful if lacking in some detail.
However it is not a tour guide. As a good straightforward introduction to the battle of Poltava and its preceding campaign it is really very good. If you want a flavour of this little known (outside of Sweden) invader of Russia who met the same fate for similar reasons as his French and German successors read this book. For a more extended discussion see Peter Englunds 'Battle that shook Europe'.

Charles IX's epic march into Russia and his battle of wits against Peter the gReat is unfortunately overshadowed in the West by the War of the Spanish Succession and the The Duke of Marlborough. This book presents a rather painless guide to how the campaiign unfolded with easy to understand maps and explanations as to why particular choices were made. This book gets 4 stars from me probably because I am a bit annoyed that Osprey persist in filching plates (however excellent) from their MAA range. There are some other illustrations. All of this should not detract from the excellent text and lucid writing.
