first of all: this was a fab PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITON at the LONDON NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, 2007. some of the best photographers from the past 20 years.
ROVERSI is the most easily recognizable, i remember him shooting for FRENCH VOGUE in the 90's and for major advertising campaign. Blurred, pastel fluid and soft, STELLA TENANT was a fave of his and features here as a masculine tomboy. VANESSA PARADIS is envoutee and unmistakable birdlike forehead never looked so sultry, NATALIA V. wins for one of the show's most striking shots. (3 shots of cameleon GUINEVERE V.S. also).
CORINNE DAY: she made a polaroid look sophisticated. She used models in the least glamourous of places and yet the photos were not banal. Maybe the beauty, rough and ready of her posers have something to do with it, a bit like JUERGEN TELLER, or TERRY RICHARDSON. 7 KATE MOSS photos, 5 GOERGINNA COOPER, 6 ROSEMARY make it clear who her fave girls were back in 1990. After all this is the girl who made Ugly Ducking Kate a major face.
PIGGOTT + ALAS are the most sophisticated and diverse, again transforming few models (2 KATES, IN striking marlene DIETRICH) but the use of Hollywood stars become too prominant, and the same can be said of KLEIN. Sleek, big budget in your face like LA CHAPPELLE, KLEIN seems to deviate to Cinema gore and farce at times. (JUSTIN T/MADONNA/BRAD P./FEDERLINE/NORTON...). SORRENTI tones it down. his winning shot was for CK!
Going back to the RICH&FAMOUS being omnipresent, it is not always for the better as i believe FASHION models are better at it. Stars are not blank canvas, they are too famous& self conscious to be blank. yet still some eye catchers there from magazines like W, VANITY FAIR,POP, THE FACE, NUMERO, I-D...
I love the size and paper and lay out, the black cover is special to me as this is one of the first photos of KATE that showed the world and myself how special she was.
