This is a very comprehensive book which really does cover all German tanks, AFV's and self propelled guns, unlike other books which may make such claims. All types of AFV covered are shown in their various variants along with basic data and brief historical and operational synopsis'. A number of prototype and experimental vehicles are also covered which would be overlooked by a lesser publication. There's even a section covering examples of some of the foreign vehicles captured and subsequently utilised by the German forces. Amongst the appendices are details of the various guns mounted on the AFV's along with details on optics and ammunition. The only criticism I have with this book is the rather brief coverage of the Panther and Tiger tanks, though this can be excused as they alone could fill a book this size. An excellent reference book.
I bought the original book when it came out in 1978 and it can only be given 5 stars! I still use it regularly today when I want some concise easy to find info. on a German AFV. The book is very comprehensive and very well made. As my title says I have regularly used this book for 34 years and it is still in great condition. Probably the best single book purchase I have ever made. It doesn't go into reams of info. on each vehicle and there are no colour photos/drawings but that was never the books purpose. Its aim was to cover all venicles and major marks and give basic info. on them and it does this brilliantly. If you like certain types of vehicle, get specific books on those but if you want an overall book on German AFVs it would be hard to find a better option. Certainly I have many books on the subject and have never found anything better in the English language.
Only 3 stars as out of print and for the price of available copies you would be better obtaining several cheaper books tailored to the types of german AFV's you prefer. However, it is an excellent book on the technical aspects of German AFV's and at its original price would be 5 stars plus.
