My grandfather was a major who died from his injuries there. He was put into then same ambulance as another major mentioned in the book. I had hoped that there might be some mention of my grandfather as he was obviously fighting near where this other major was but sadly no. However I still enjoyed the book and it gave me a very good idea of what things were like there and what my grandfather went through.

One of the truly outstanding first hand accounts of WW1. He describes so vividly being sent to a "quiet" sector (Chemin des Dames) to recuperate among unspoiled scenery, only to have Ludendorff's latest attack launched on them. The photo of a captured Brigadier standing to attention and talking with the Kaiser is unforgettable. I note His Imperial Majesty is standing higher up the slope of the Winterberg - funny, that!

Another excellent book by Sidney Roberson about the German offensive in 1918. Written by someone who was there in the language of the time.
