This book is perfect for anyone seeking to learn more about the journey of meditation, and is ideal for both beginner and more experienced meditators. While the book is written from the perspective of the Christian tradition, readers of all faiths, or even those without a faith, will find powerful and practical wisdom within its pages. The author guides the reader through the various internal processes and changes that occur along the path of meditation, and also addresses the common challenges and questions that arise. Because meditation brings us face to face with ourselves, and especially with our own ego, it is easy to get discouraged. With a holistic and balanced understanding of the practice of meditation, Freeman reminds us to be patient and gentle with ourselves, and continue with the practice of meditation day by day, in silence, stillness, and simplicity. As the author states in introduction, "Meditation is simple though not easy. But it is universally possible. It is as natural to the spirit as breathing is to the body." This book is not only extremely practical, but it also offers many valuable philosophical and theological insights. Holiness is not presented as some lofty, unattainable ideal, but rather as the universal call to wholeness and fullness of being. If the practice of meditation is performed patiently and faithfully, transformation is inevitable. The meditator will come to an ever-deepening knowledge of himself or herself, others, and the God who is at the center of all things. Then, meditation ceases to be merely an exercise, but instead becomes an act of love. This book offers invaluable guidance for the spiritual life. Laurence Freeman's words are a gift to his readers, filled with gentleness and compassion, and with wisdom and understanding.

An excellent book which I have read to rekindle my enthusiasm for this form of prayer. Very simple yet requires a great deal of commitment and time. Is there anyone else interested in forming a small group? Bernadette
