Very useful and quick identifier - good for youngsters and enthusiastic amateurs.

This is a handy guide to take out and about when hoping to quickly identify any butterflies you encounter. I'd say that this guide will appeal more to youngsters and enthusiastic amateurs like me rather than to the more serious lepidopterist.
The guide is printed on a single sheet of thick 'plasticised' card which makes it waterproof and robust. The guide folds out lengthways into four equal panels which each measure 245mm x 175mm. One side of the guide consists of text which provides some basic information under such headings as 'What Are Butterflies?', 'Life-Cycles', 'Parasites and Predators', 'Colours and Behaviour' and 'Protecting Butterflies'. The other side consists of colour illustrations displayed in different categories - 'Emperors', 'Skippers', 'Hairstreaks', 'Whites and Yellows' etc. There are 58 species of British butterfly included here, although the few scarce species (such as Camberwell Beauty, Monarch or Queen of Spain Fritillary) are not included. What is particularly useful about this guide is that the illustrations show the male and female of each species as well as their underwings. The text also assures us that each illustration is life-size. Most other guides don't seem to be as comprehensive and they can occasionally leave someone like me thumbing through pages and wondering why they can't locate the specimen they are actually looking at in the guide!
I would recommend this guide to anyone as being easy to use and to carry. It folds up into a convenient size to tuck away in a bag or large pocket (I've folded mine again which makes it slightly smaller than notebook or A5 size) and it's waterproof and robust. It will be especially useful as an easy identifier for youngsters as well as for enthusiastic adults who wish to stand some chance of quickly identifying a male or female butterfly that they might only see for a few seconds. My guide only cost me £4 including postage and packing which I think is terrific value for money.
