As a fantasy artist I am always looking for inspiration. Fantasy art requires a lot of imagination and this book was ecellent. The pictures are all very gothic and have given me inspiration for many many drawings and paintings. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy art.

Boris Vallejo is a master at fantasy art and this book is full of excellent examples of his work.
This is the second copy I have purchased, as I lent my original copy out and never got it back! So,clearly I think that it is a good buy.
Whilst containing some tips, it is not however, truly a 'technique - work book' and some prior knowledge and understanding of drawing / painting technique is required (in my opinion) to get the most out of it.
Having said that, it is very informative about Vallejo's personal methods; 'tricks of the trade' and his own philosophy of art.
If you want to 'learn how to produce fantasy art from scratch' there are better books available at Amazon but none are as inspirational, nor do they contain such beautiful photo plates.
Well worth the money.

Fantastic paintings which are accompanied by a detailed explanation as to how the author envisaged them and practically created them. Every painting is presented and analyzed from its start till its final and complete rendering. Methods, materials used and artist’s indentions are presented thoroughly. Book also has some ink works which are fantastic and in some instances are better than the oil counterparts.

I absolutely love Boris Vallejo's art, and as an artist, I would love to be able to do what he can. Which is of course why you buy a book like this.
I was very disappointed when I received the book. It serves more as a look back through his back catalogue of work (some unpublished stuff as well). There are a few (very few) pieces of advice and tips on how to set up your reference photos and prepare a portfolio, but overall it is so general and vague that you will learn little more than "there is no one way to paint skin colour" or "it takes time to get good". Chances are you already knew that...
This book was either compiled in a hurry by request of Boris Vallejo's financial advisor, or he is simply not interested in passing on the knowledge he has of his craft. Quite disappointing.

Boris Vallejo has become something of an icon among fantasy artists throughout the world. He paints the human figure in such a way as to make it almost photographic, yet adds a touch of the fantastic to his art that makes it even better. Now he has put out a book that goes even further; because instead of putting out a series of paintings for us to ooh and ahh over, he gives the average joe an opportunity to learn to emulate the master himself. I bought this book for myself, and as an art major in college, I have found that this book really shows how hard work and perseverance pay off in beautiful works of art that we can all aspire to create for ourselves. It's not just simple paint by the numbers either, he really digs down into the basis of his painting and even gives advice for beyond the pallette, such as creating a portfolio. If you want to paint landscapes and flowers and bridges and seagulls this is not the book for you. However, if you want to put the fantastic visions of your mind onto canvas, BUY THIS BOOK. You'll thank me for it, you really will.

Although a very good book, not so much of a how to book as one would expect. Boris Vallejo simply describes his approach to the art world. One must read and pull out what they want to know; it's not indexed as a how to book usually is done. Nevertheless, worth the investment for anyone wishing even to make realistic forms, and a must for the fantasy artist.

Boris Vallejo has acquired quite a reputation for himself in the field of fantasy art. However, although his work is visually engaging and his skill is formidable, his artistic sense leaves something to be desired. This book is good reference if you want to paint like Boris, but I would recommend picking up Frazetta instead-compare the two and you'll see what I mean. Boris's figures are static and remarkably stationary; he paints a photograph, and the photograph captures a still, dead scene rather than a fluid motion. This book would fit on your shelf, and has some useful insight, but I recommend spending a couple extra bucks and picking up Frazetta's _Icon_ instead.

This is a fascinating look at how Boris Vallejo produces his amazing paintings. Not only does it take the reader step-by-step through Boris' creation process, it is full of beautiful, full-color prints of some of his most fabulous and famous paintings. A must for any Boris Vallejo fan, or for anyone interested in the process of creating fantasy art. The forward by the late Dr. Isaac Asimov makes this volume even more priceless. This is a book anyone interested in art and beauty will be proud to own.

The paintings and illustrations are superb, well worth buying the book for. But..... in my opinion it is very short on "art techniques" Some hints and tips but not what I expected from the title.
