Sicky, confused and over stylised
on 24 April 2012
I had great hopes for a book with this title, but there seems to be anything but real homespun style here - instead a lot of sickly sweetness, of the fullblown, full colour type this time. I agree totally with "Peasant" anyone who actually makes anything, or wants to create a room to do so in, will find very little of interest in this book. Things look too obviously and neatly placed, too staged, its all about effect rather than substance. This is stylisation, suitable for a magazine spread perhaps, extended into book form. I guess there must be a need for this kind of sort furnishing porn, as we see so much of it, but I doubt whether it helps anyone actually decorate, its just this weeks staged look. I would say this is because the authors are usually stylists rather than interior designers (who actually have to make things work for people in real life). When I went back to art college recently to do postgrad work the courses were full of students wanting to become stylists, it seems to be a growth area - so 21st century. Writing a long article and then turning it into book porn is actually quite lazy - visually, and in authorship - come on, we can do better than this.
