Peter Rostron gives an interesting historical description of the events aroung General Dempsey's career. However, Dempsey does not "come to life" - partly due, no doubt, to his humility and having left few autobiographical or personal writings. To me, at any rate, Dempsey remains an enigma: someone who rose to become 'Monty's Army Commander' - and that's about it.

I have always thought of General Dempsey as Monty's boy, doing what he was told to by the great man. This book clearly shows how wrong one can be. This officer was very much his own man and very much the commander of 2nd Army. I heartily recommend this book.

This truly comprehensive and fulfilling resume of Sir Miles's career has plugged a much overdue gap in military history by exposing the full story of the comlexities, frailities and tensions surrounding the key players in saving the world from oppressors.

As you read this tome, you live the lives that Dempsey influenced, guided and nutured through the horrors of WW1 through to post WW11.

A wonderful read so well put togehter. Peter Rostrom is to be highly commended.

A good read about those times and the almost forgotten part that Dempsey played in command of the 2nd Army and the D-Day landings and the campagn accross Europe. A good price too and quick to arrive.

I was referred to the book whilst researching another topic. It is an excellent piece of work providing a lot of information about a true unsung hero. How many others are out there? Their stories need to be told and we need more authors like Peter Rostron to bring them back to life.
