This is a beautifully produced book, containing some of Gustave Dore's most evocative illustrations, set to Tennyson's legendary tome. Editor Valerie Purton includes some guidance at the beginning of each section, to help with the interpretation of Tennyson's prose. A superb book, and one that you can return to, time and time again. Now...where did I put me broadsword and shield?
This is a beautiful edition and represents exceptional value for money. The editor, a Tennyson specialist, has abridged the original into a tighter, more cohesive whole which makes a wonderful starting point for the beginner who might otherwise be daunted by the original in its entirety. The illustrations are by the original illustrator who left off part-way through, so they have been supplemented by others from his canon.
