This first volume, complete with illustrations of Scott's first expedition to the frozen continent, is a wonderful, enchanting account of discovery, humour, joy and the hardship which men face when undergoing such privations brought about when living in cramped and extreme conditions. The accounts of unpredictable weather, mountain ranges, ice formations, strange surfaces and the many new discoveries are brought to the reader in a captivating and bewitching narrative.

Of course, after closing the final pages of the first volume, the reader is acutely aware there is `unfinished business' and is consumed with an overwhelming propensity to continue this account and hunt out the second volume.

Product description states that "photographs, paintings and sketches greatly enhance this work", however the copy I was sent contains no illustrations. Have returned for refund.
