My father has all of Dale Ralph Davis' commentaries in the Focus on the Bible series,
I've now read Joshua, Judges, 1 Samuel and have just finished 2 Samuel. They are in one word, fantastic! You must read them! They have opened my mind to see things I had never seen in these books of the Bible, and my spiritual life is all the more better for reading them.
Dale Ralph Davies does what he does so well in this commentary. He serves up the biblical text in an incisive and clear way so that we learn the lessons to be learnt from the historical narrative of 2 Samuel. This I believe is quite an achievement as the historical books of the Bible tend to 'tell it how it is', serving up the human history with all its strengths and weaknesses, the palatable and the unpalatable behaviour of the characters we meet there. Dale Ralph Davies does a good job of getting behind all this and bringing out the applications for the reader today. Written with a great deal of wit and wisdom this may not be the largest or academic commentary on 2 Samuel, but it doesn't aim to be as it is more concerned with serving up these lessons in a simple and easy to understand way and all at a very reasonable price making this excellent value! So if you are looking for a good commentary for preaching, leading Bible study groups or your own private study, if you can only get one get this! As I have said there may be more academic commentaries on this book of the Bible (which stand the chance of being as dull as dish water) but you won't find many, if any, that are so helpful and, dare I say it, fun to read!
