Decent collection, some gems some mild disappointments
on 2 January 2014
I picked this up as a slightly rusty intermediate-level player. Quite a few recognisable standards but a fair few I'd not heard too.
In terms of difficulty, I'd say around 4 easier intermediate (but still nice) pieces, around 10 challenging but doable intermediate-level, and 6 or so more advanced intermediate that I haven't really expended the effort yet to nail. Not so much that the technical difficulty is completely off the map, perhaps more because there are some long meandering pieces with lots of transcribed improvisatory stretches which don't seem to reward the careful sight-reading required. This really just clues you in that you should be getting better at improvising this stuff yourself rather than trying to read it from a book. That said there's enough shorter more memorable pieces in here too that it's not a huge problem, and obviously your tastes may vary.
Some of the pieces (like the Nina Simone) do seem to be fairly accurate transcriptions which is nice.
