When the great hero of the city of Idriss is murdered it is up to Vidar, Lord of Silence, to find the killer and defend the city against the terrors lurking in the dense forest that surrounds it. Vidar is complex, having no recollection of his past or why he has a vampire jewel that requires him to draw on the life energy of others to survive. This is not your normal vampire book by any means, it is a fantasy book first and foremost.

To find the murderer he must solve a 3 thousand year old mystery and face the dangers in the forest.

The story centres around this quest. There is high adventure, daring deeds and a mad dancing magician. All the main characters work together nicely, all have their own issues and flaws which keep them believable. There is some light banter in amongst excellent action and enough side stories to give it depth.

This is swords and sorcery with a smattering of vampire, horror and sci fi thrown into the melting pot. What comes out is an enjoyable fast paced tense fantasy/thriller/horror. Well worth a read.

At first this book may appear to be a simple murder mystery but rather than set in the usual Victorian or Edwardian England, it is set on a world other than ours, in the land of Idriss. Vidar, our anti-hero, has inherited a job after his much beloved predecessor's murder. He works to solve the mystery, and his investigations take him outside the walled city where he not only sheds light on his future, but his past. In the city, Rhiannon is also investigating the same murder, as well as subsequent ones by the same culprit. Her life, quite literally, depends on it. As I said earlier, this book is more than just a murder mystery set in a fantasy environment, because of the other themes it explores, such as love, betrayal, religion, and friendship. The world and its inhabitants are exquisitely detailed and I found myself wishing the book was bigger, or there was a sequel, as there is still so much left to explore.

This is a really thrilling read, the story is completely absorbing. I found my self totally lost in the book! The descriptions of the characters and their relationships with each other are well thought out, and you can almost taste the emotion at times! There is a subtle love element which works well. There is a part of the story that actually made me cry, and I'm a right hard nosed old bird who rarely gets stirred like that! There is a fabulous array of characters from the noble to the down right demonic. There are also plenty of juicy horror moments to quench your appetite! If you love fantasy horror, you will love this.
