Totally dissapointed with this one, was looking for more info but just got a list that seems to have been produced by the war office, and it doesn't even include all units!!!!!

If your ancestor was in a London regiment, then don't bother with this book. There is virtually nothing in the book apart from some basic facts. Also disapointing is the indexing which leaves a lot to be desired. The only index is a regimental index, there are no indexes to the RFA, RAMC, ASC, etc. Just the regiments. So if you know your ancestor was in the Royal West Kent Regiment, or the Coldstream Guards great. If you only know from their war record that they were in the 311th Battalion or the 281st battalion it's not indexed.

The book arrived on time and in excellent condition thank you.
I am a battlefield guide and the book will help with detailed questions I get on Regiments on the Somme in WW 1. Thank you. J Walker

Whilst my primary interests are the York and Lancaster Regiment Battalions, I found the information given about them and other Regiments fascinating and an eye-opener. It was a revelation that some Battalions served on the Front Lines for almost the entire duration of the War on the Somme or at least in that general sector. Well written and concise. No padding, butg facts presented in an interesting and absorbing way. A damned good book, and useful to boot. Thanks.

Totally agree with previous reviewer. Waste of money. Bought this at a local bookseller for the full cover price. Silly me!

This is a history of the 87 regiments and their 616 battalions that took part in the Battle of the Somme- 1 July--18 November 1916 when over one million men died of which 419,000 were British.
There is no text in the book just a listing with a short account of the activities of the regiments and battalions eg. Coldstream Guards ( 4 battalions),Scots Guards (2 Battalions)and 63rd Naval Naval Division (8 battalions).
Ideal source material for anyone who wants to trace the movements of a relative.
There is an excellent map pf the battle site and a few pictures.
