5.0 out of 5 starsRead this. Please read this. Extraordinarily beautiful and insightful book.
28 July 2018
Operation Lighthouse is above all a beautiful tribute to a loving mother and sister, by two brothers. Luke and Ryan Hart tell us the backstory to the cruel murder of these two women. They were cold-bloodedly killed by a man who had tyrannized his family for their entire lives but had never physically abused them. Since December 2015 coercion and control is a crime in the UK. But as Luke and Ryan show us, coercion and control is poorly understood by most of us and even by victims themselves, who are fully engaged in developing day by day survival strategies anyway. Co&Co is insidious, difficult to understand while you are experiencing it, highly damaging to mental health and wellbeing and dangerous, since many cases end with killings. Never underestimate the risks. The legal definition is accurate but abstract. Luke and Ryan show us exactly how families become entrapped by these manipulative criminal behaviours. These young men are speaking up to help others who may be going through similar life situations and to advocate for everybody who needs our help to be safe.
One of the most insightful and courageous books I've ever read. Claire and Charlotte Hart would be so proud of Luke and Ryan. With this book and with their ongoing advocacy they are setting a living memorial to two lovely, loving women.

Too much emphasis on references and causes and effects and not enough about their actual lives and how their fathers behaviours affected them as children, teenagers etc. It was heartbreaking that a mother and her daughter lost their life’s to a man who controlled their life. They tried to escape but couldn’t.

5.0 out of 5 starscompelling and sad, with very clear messages for us all

This was a one sitting read, it had to be that way because I could not put the book down and walk away, it would feel like knowing a little of what was going on and then ignoring it. Luke and Ryan's book clearly describes coercive control, the dangers and how hard it was for them to create their own moments of safety and normality when being controlled and emotionally abused by their father. Luke and Ryan brought love, warmth and quality to the lives of their mother Claire and sister Charlotte, this made the book easier to read, knowing how much they loved each other and protected each other. But, it should not have to be that way. All services around a family should be on the look out for coercive control and emotional abuse factors. The children's intelligence and behaviour was exemplary, but the control within the family was there to see, if 'we' looked hard enough.
I took direct actions from this book - I've talked to colleagues at work, I'm giving a copy to my fellow trustees at my local Women's Aid, I'm going to share a copy of the book and talk about the issues with school Designated Safeguarding Leads that I work with in the autumn term.
Ryan and Luke, I wish you happy, successful, peaceful lives, inspired by your Mum and Sister.

I read Luke and Ryan's article in the Guardian which told of their shock at the sympathetic presentation their father received in the press having murdered their mother and sister. This book really shines a light on the way society and people accidently collude with and make excuses for abusers.

The love the two brothers have for their late mum and younger sister is very moving. Coercive control is an issue that needs bringing out of the shadows.

I hope this book is a best seller, it deserves to be.

5.0 out of 5 starsA must read for our society.

I have just finished reading this book. It made me cry. It made me take very deep breaths at the astonishing insights from these extraordinary young men. That they can survive these brutality, and embody their mother and sister, and give them a voice, and go on, is astonishing. Considering their writing, there are no ‘so what’ lines, no fillers, everything informs the narrative that is the truth of our society. Their mum and sister are surely applauding this. Here is a narrative that everyone should read. I truly think that this is one of the most important publications of the modern age. The insights here are also relevant to our macro society. I’ve just bought ten more copies to give to friends and colleagues, and will recommend it to everyone I know. Well done, Luke and Ryan. You are amazing men. Thank you. And much love.

5.0 out of 5 starsA powerful and personal account of the consequences of domestic coercive control and a beautiful tribute to two incredible women
2 August 2018
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase
I read this book in one day. It is an extremely brave tribute to their mother Claire and their sister Charlotte who were killed by their father after decades of living under his coercive control. In this book Luke and Ryan not only describe with great clarity the realities of living with their father, a brutal patriarch, they also describe with great love what it was like to live with two beautiful caring women - their mother and their sister. Luke and Ryan's insights into gender violence, patriarchal dominance, gaslighting and the path that we all need to take to end those behaviours are incredibly important and will surely change the conversation about domestic abuse and coercive control. This is such an important book, I cannot recommend it enough.

I read this book in one day. I'm full of admiration for Luke and Ryan. They have endured such loss and pain, yet they are determined to help others.
The message contained in this book about coercive control, domestic abuse and society's narrative surrounding violence against women and children is a hugely important one. Essential reading.

It’s not very often I read a book and feel I need to share about it.
Luke and Ryan tell their story that lead to the cruel murder of their Mother and Sister. They were killed by their father in cold blood a man who had tormented his family for their entire lives but had never physically abused them. Luke and Ryan show us that co&co is poorly understood by most of us and including victims themselves, who spend their days developing survival strategies. Coercive and Controlling behaviour is difficult to understand while you are living it, and many cases end with killings. Luke and Ryan show us exactly how families become entrapped by these manipulative criminal behaviours. By speaking up Luke and Ryan are hopeful of helping others who may be going through similar life situations and to advocate for everybody who needs our help to be safe.
