Novel fantasy - pacy and well written
on 6 August 2005
I bought Myrren's Gift, the first book, expecting the usual fantasy characters, quest etc etc but was genuinely surprised and delighted to find such a unique novel. The main premise (albeit perhaps borrowed a little bit from TV's Quantum Leap) is given a neat twist and becomes quite enthralling as the hero Wyl battles in various guises to save his country and, most importantly, those he cares about from a twisted king. This novel builds on the politics and treachery of the first book and you find yourself hoping that Wyl gets a break from his continued heartache - a good sign that the author has succeeded in really making you care about the fate of the main characters. Of course being the middle book of a trilogy only more despair is piled upon our hero and the ending really sets you up for a cracking conclusion (roll on December and book 3!). I look forward to reading much more from Ms McIntosh, she is indeed a worthy successor to Robin Hobb (who she credits in this book as being an inspiration). If you are looking for something just a bit out of the ordinary I would highly recommend this series.
