West's novels are vastly overrated, in my opinion. Literary critics claim that he portrays "the tawdriness and meretriciousness of much of American popular culture" and "dismantles the myth, here a caustic satire of the `rags to riches' story" (from the publisher's blurb above). In reality, having read the entire lot, the impression is that he describes life in the Great Depression through the eyes of mean-spirited, arrogant, self-centered pseudo-intellectual characters--who are also so unlikeable that I found empathy impossible. It reminds me in several ways of John Fante. Want to read about the Depression? Stick to Steinbeck and Faulkner, to name just a couple of writers head and shoulders above West.

A wonderfile writer with an eye for drama and the traumatic. 3 titles for the price of one. A must for anyone interested in relatively contemporary literature.

Amazing stories, Nathanael West is wicked. Any fans of The Drowned Man - 'Day of the Locust' included in this is absolutely essential reading.

Don't miss out on these tales of woe from the times of The Great Depression because of the nature of the tales but because of the greatness of West's writing - especially The Day of the Locust.

Inexpensive for what it is! Recommend to anyone interested in or studying Hollywood fiction, 1930s fiction or the 'American Dream'.

I haven't had time to read it yet but the book came in very good condition and the cover looks quite enticing.
