One of the most up to date guides on Myanmar, but even this is lacking
9 February 2018
Took this along as a guide on a recent trip to Myanmar. It's hard to keep up with a place where everything is changing as quickly as it is in Myanmar, so I found it lacking in many areas, especially restaurant choices. Some of the villages I went to (and I stayed on a fairly well-trodden tourist route), don't even make it into the guide, so it is hard to get background information.
Overall it was a useful guide to have, but I did get irritated by Lonely Planet's slightly sneering attitude towards 'tourists'. We can't all take months off and go backpacking into untrodden parts - most of us have to squeeze our travels into two week holidays, and, yes, we want to see the best that a country has to offer in that time. That doesn't make us all plebs who only want to take a selfie then go and find KFC and chips. I lost count of the number of times I read 'avoid the tourists', or 'if you can bear the tourists' etc. A backpacker with a beard is just as much of a tourist as an old lady in a coach party and they all need a helpful guidebook!
