Like many I was drawn to this book by it’s cover and by catching my eye I read the blurb. Thereafter the words were on their own and them words done good. A dark, threatening and sometimes saucy read, completed in a weekend (give or take a few days). Good strong female characters and they needed to be strong to contend with Alexander & Badcock. The plight of the Victorian woman as mere chatel lurks between the letters, words, paragraphs and chapters. The “cold turkey” joke on Boxing Day was a good’un too. Irony at its best.
