Cass Lynch thinks she has made it good when she gets a job to skipper a Viking longship for a film shot in Shetland. It could be the break she needs to get over a traumatic event in her past, to prove to her estranged businessman father and absent opera singer mother that her choice of career is viable. A death on board and it no longer looks so good. Taylor takes the reader through a carefully plotted story with vivid characters from the world of film and from the local Shetland community. Through the murder mystery Taylor deals with belonging, culture-clashes and environmental issues. Her love for Shetland shines through the narrative and I learnt a lot about the island way of life and its challenges. Taylor uses dialect sparingly and this reader was grateful for that but for those interested there is an appendix with a guide to the Shetland dialect. An engaging read.
