Ruth Rendell is one of the best British authors, and has an instant success with her departure to childrens books. The subject matter could not be better(who does'nt like pets?)The illustrations are really good,as is the storyline.A must have stocking filler for any lucky child!!.

This is a series of vignettes about a cat and dog, both called Archie, but unfortunately that's where the appeal ends. It isn't a story, as each vignette goes off at a tangent, so in such a small book we're introduced to lots of characters but none of them really have any part to play, and nothing ever becomes of anything. Archie the cat goes missing twice in 56 pages and each time it's because he gets locked in a house whilst the owners are away - one for 7 days and one for 12. There is no originality to it. It's a like a ramble about "my pets", and it has a "so what" feel. Yes the author is well known and the writing reflects that in literary terms, but it doesn't mean she can write a good story for children, and she would be better sticking to what she's good at. The illustrations on the whole are also terrible - black and white line drawings, but there is something odd about most of the cat faces. There are better, good stories for children about animals and in hardback this is a waste of money.
