I enjoyed reading the previous book, Helix from which this book follows. That story tells of a desperate mission by survivors from a dying Earth to find a new planet on which to sustain life. Their mission has more of an unlooked-for outcome than they could ever have imagined. Now two hundred years later, the New Earthers live on the planetoid system known as the Helix, with other planets and other races and peoples living on other planets in the Helix. When the Phandran homeworld is invaded by the Sporelli, Jeff Ellis, a New Earther is caught up in the conflict. The Phandrans attempt to help him escape the search for him by the Sporelli, while Kranda, a Mahkan also seeks him to repay a blood debt of honour.
A really good follow-up to Helix, I actually enjoyed this book even more. The opportunity has been well taken to flesh out the worlds of the Helix, as well as the races that we encounter in the story. The characters are well drawn and the narrative, and action (plot within plot) is really driven by the characters; very clearly and very well done. Great stuff.
