Excellent guide with practical help. Out-of-date as soon as published but you'd expect that from a very fast changing world. The associated web site helps negate this. A good time to engage with social media if you are older - so much as changed and it is no longer simply a tool for ridiculous exchange of inane comments but powerful tool for garnering action.

If you want to get started in social media for business, or if you are already experienced in this area, this is the book to read! If you think that YouTube has all the answers then you could be missing out, as the authors draw attention to many things you didn’t know that you need to know! In particular, the explanations of the development of the social media age was really eye opening and brings home the sequence and speed of developments and why it is so important to keep up.
The book is exceptionally well structured, it can either be read from start to finish or it can be dipped into using the very inviting and comprehensive index. The friendly tone is knowledgeable but easy to understand and the book is very well illustrated throughout. As things constantly evolve in this field the authors also have a blog and twitter account to ensure they continue to keep you totally up-to-date with the latest developments.
A ‘go-to’ and immensely practical book full of inspiration for absolutely everything to do with being social in business. Definitely very thought provoking - my social media ‘to do’ list has just got a whole lot longer!

I bought the first edition of this book and found I was constantly referring to it when using social media, and when I saw the second edition I just had to have it as well. It has proven invaluable to me and it would recommend it to anyone who wants to use social media for business, or if you are just curious about the various platforms and how they can can be used to your advantage.

So I've been working in digital for a long time now and have managed various social campaigns. I'm always up for reading up on the latest thinking to keep on top of a very fast paced industry. So the +ve review that came with this book made it a must-read and it's a good read. Whilst the book claims to be relevant for all levels, it's most useful for those new or bedding into the discipline. The overviews of the different channels are second to none, as are the recommendations on what to do/not do. Hand for learning the odd new thing and polishing skills, but better suited for beginners/intermediates.

I run a small business in my spare-time; one that is totally divorced from my main job. I do it more for the love of it rather than the (very) small amount of extra income it provides.

I've thought about promoting it - and to this end I sought out useful ideas in this book.

There are tons of them, and the various ways in which can be used to gain maximum exposure are discussed and illustrated.

If you're looking to get s business off the ground, or simply wish to use social media to its best possible advantage, this book is certainly worth a look.

Whilst this is a very good book, well researched and written, the problem with any book on social media in the digital age is that it sets itself at a point in time. As the big players such as Facebook and Twitter change their business models to suit market conditions, recommendations in sweeping titles become irrelevant. For example a Facebook page is no longer the tool it was due to limiting algorithms, and playing the FB ad game is the only way to guarantee your post gets reach - and even then you are not guaranteed a response.

Whilst good points are made, in six months they may be moot. To keep with the times it may be better to review peer blogs amd articles rather than rely on textbooks such as these, effective whilst they might be at time of print.

Well written, practical and informative guide to social media for both the uninitiated and the seasoned user. It explains each of the main social media platforms and how to harness them as a powerful tool for your business. A very worthwhile read.

This is an amazingly useful book for anyone who owns or runs a small to medium organisation (company or charity) or who is a sole trader doing their own thing. Social media is the big thing these days and with so much business being done and organised online, it is vital to understand what's out there and how best to make use of it.
Most larger organisations can afford to pay someone to be their expert in social media - the rest of us have to find our way through the maze on our own - or with a semi-comprehensible techie book written in jargon for folks who already know the landscape.
This book is different. It is practical, down to earth and, most importantly, very accessible. You learn the basics about the main social media platforms, from a business point of view, and then you are taken through the details of how each of them works, and does not work - which I found very illuminating as it goes down to the level of what sort of approach is likely to get people's attention on each platform - and they are not the same, by any means. You need to understand your market and your customers in order to make the most of the information in this book - not just basic demographics either, but a little bit of psychology as well. Armed with that, and this book, your social media marketing and PR strategy can become the best and most effective you've ever put together. And once you have achieved that, you will understand why maintaining a coherent and up-to-date social media strategy is as important and valuable as the old fashioned kind. If not more so - depending on your business..
