This book is the life story of Dr.Sir John Kirk (1832-1922) explorer, botanist, doctor, diplomat and a graduate of Edinburgh University.
After accompanying Livingstone on his second Zambezi expedition (1857-63) he became British consul in Zanzibar.
Slavery was abolished in the British Empire with acts of 1807 and 1833 but it continued in Zanzibar till 1873 mainly at the instigation of the East India Company. Black Africans in their thousands from large areas of mainland Africa were brought to the slave market in Zanzibar and sold to be transported to the Middle East,America and Asia.
It was Kirks work as consul (1857-87) that finally saw the end of African slavery in 1873.
A very well written and documented book.

Fascinating, history of places (Zanzibar, East Africa, Malawi) and events not widely covered among so much else that was going on in the world. Full of horror, also of recognition that in that time and place that's how people were, and that's how the public, rulers, politicians, and press behaved. I found it a really good read which gave me much to ponder and led to some further reading as it is well annotated and referenced.

It was interestingly written on many levels, clearly indicating the attitudes of the day based on written information from specific characters. Well done.

I read this while on holiday in Zanzibar. Not only a genuinely riveting read, but the historical detail has enriched my general knowledge enormously.
