My wife and I travelled to the Galapagos and mainland Equador in 2012. We actually purchased the brand new pdf version while away. I can honestly say the book was next to useless. For example:
In the Galapagos, the Lonely Planet recommends three dive shops. One had been closed for over 18 months after they 'killed' a tourist. Another didn't even have a national park licence. The final one was very shoddy, IMHO, and we actually went with an 'unlisted' school. The instructor (Macaroon) was actually featured in a BBC documentary on sharks. There were other experienced divers that thought the same as us (Israeli, French, Argentinian),
We also went to Montanita in Equador. We booked a place based upon the recommendation in the book. Never have I stayed anywhere as depressing and squalid. A single 2W bulb, a dirty mattress.
The book is hopelessly out of date and is clearly not 'fully updated'. I doubt their 'journalist' even visited these major Ecuadorian attractions.
