Jagdish Bhagwati has been a great economist, one of the best in world trade studies. But now, in his later age, he is too prone to tight ideological battle. This book may be crucial in the Indian political debate, but its stances are too roughly cut to be of interest elsewhere.

I have recently been reading the book by Amartya Sen and Dreze on why the poverty in India is still a problem and experienced the sense of despair that both the authors worked so hard to convery. I believe the Jagdish Bhagwati offers a better view and explanation of the problem. Rather than present a gloomy picture through esoteric numbers, Bhagwati takes a more pragmatic and sensible approach to how the problems of India can be addressed. Also Bhagwati explains the importance of self initiative and government assistance over intervention.

I would disagree with the previous reviewer who seems to have ignored the fact that politics and political agendas are a big proportion of the problem. Bhagwati deals with this topic head and offers a number of sensible solution.
