A reasonably priced copy of a classic text. All Reformed Christians should have an idea of what Calvin says. Good purchase

A long read, worth it all the way. This version is readable. Layout in book 3 is a little strange?

Note: This review concerns the Kindle edition of Calvin's Institutes published by the Christian Classic Ethereal Library.

I tried four different Kindle versions of Calvin's Institutes using Amazon's 'Try a Sample' feature.

The sample for this one had a proper Kindle Table of Contents, as well as the in-text linked TOC.

It was also formatted nicely - with different size texts for different size headings, and so on.

BUT: that is only in the sample. The actual version has none of those things, and is as poorly formatted as the £0.77 priced version. CCEL have done themselves a disservice.

This edited copy of Calvin's Institutes is a great benefit to anyone wanting to read the book and gain a sense of what the Reformer was saying. True, a lot of the anti-Catholic ranting is removed. But you don't have to be a Catholic to find such diatribes depressing and, in terms of Christian faith, immature. Calvin was a great writer in the sixteenth century Humanist tradition. Some of his exaltant passages about God are of great value. At the same time, some readers will find Calvin's idea that most of the human race is doomed by God to damnation, to be a thoroughly inadequate version of Christian 'Good news'. With Calvin, for most of the people of the world (who are unavoidably and endlessly damned by prior divine decree), to be opposed to that of the New Testament and straightforwardly 'bad news'. Tony Lane, by editing the lengthy Institutes, provides us with an excellent guide to its contents. You can use the Lane version to find your way around the unabridged original. Also, Lane has selected the best expressed passages from this vast work. So, he has done readers a great service.
