A hugely important topic that is not really given justice by this short book. Although worthy, a lot of the content is re-hashed from other sources (eg the well known story of Snow's cholera map of London). Some, such as the 'conspiracy' by the big drink manufacturers to eliminate public water fountains (if true) is a revelation and scandal. The resources wasted in the creation, transportation and dumping of plastic bottles should be understood by everyone, particularly kids. Read this book and you will never buy a bottle of water again.

I rated this 5/5 after reading it whilst doing an elective course during my degree. I have always had an interest in environmental issues, especially the needless issues created through waste, such as beach litter. I am in agreement with Gleick, in that in countries such as Scotland, water is a natural and free resource, so why is the public succoured into paying for water in bottles which have no recyclable value.
Gleick teaches us to revisit our habits and question who benefits from what.
