This is an incredibly simple story - 2 children get lost on a winters night on the home from their Grandparents. The book is very short and I read it in one sitting, though if it had been twice as long I still would have read it one go as it held my attention avidly.

The simplicity of the book almost hides how well written it is. The scenery and community in which the story is set are described so well that they leap off the page and inhabit your mind for the duration of the book.

This is a story about children and dangerous adventure - a brother and sister get lost in the mountains at Christmas as it begins to snow. The language is simple and lovely, translated by Elizabeth Mayer and poet Marianne Moore. You can read it in a sitting.

I love lots of books by the publisher NYRB Classics. That's partly why I picked this one up.
