This is a good story simply told without being over-dramatised. The characters come to the surface with the lightness of touch of a ink drawing. I am surprised it has been out of print so long. The publishers are to be congratulated for re-issuing it.
A very enjoyable yet often poignant read when the horrors of war intervene. Having read other accounts of SOE operations in Crete I am yet again amazed by another account written by an operative who seeming writes as though he was simply a part of an adventure holiday. I suppose modesty precludes Xan Fielding as it did Billy Moss and Paddy Leigh Fermor from being to prosaic but, you only have to read one chapter of this book to realise these men were truly brave, patriotic and loyal to the countries and people they fought for and more possibly along side.
Long may their writings live to preserve their memory.
Really excellent. Wonderfully descriptive account of his time on Crete. Fielding did a terrific job in organising the Cretan resistance. The whole role played by the Cretans was played down post war and the participants never received the credit they deserved..
