How Would You Spend Your 50th Birthday?
27 September 2016
Clair is not having a good time: she's about to turn 50; she's dealing on her own with a stroppy teenage daughter; and can do nothing to please her equally stroppy mother. But a holiday in Greece brings some positivity into her life and she starts to turn things around. Can she pull it off, or will all the challenges be too much for her?
Lynne McVernon's debut novel is funny, heart-warming and heart-wrenching in turn. The device of using different points of view to show the same incidents works very well.
This primarily a book about a woman of 'a certain age' and her thoughts, fer and feelings will be recognisable to readers of a similar age; but the wide range of characters, from young Jude to elderly Maggie, and the great range of voices, make this a book for all readers. And did I mention it was funny too? Highly recommended.
