I must be frank and say this is not a book I would normally have chosen to read. I downloaded it from an Amazon prompt and began to wonder why I was reading what amounted to a lot of girly stuff laced with a bit of soft porn. Then it became clear that within the light and rather narrow setting was a substantial and well written novel exploring the tragic world which somehow we know about but ignore. The world in which young children get a rough deal which destroys their own lives as well as the lives of those with whom they later entangle.

A tour de force which has made me think, at one level harrowing but at another full of hope; hope that as a society we can do better than this. The author showed courage and ingenuity to communicate her message. I am glad she did and I admire her for it.

This book intrigued me as once I discovered that it was written by the same person who wrote The Second Chance Shoe Shop and I wanted to find out how well the same person could write in two different styles. The answer is - incredibly well.

Charley is recovering from the death of her husband and unborn child and has decided to make a new start in a flat across town. Her new landlady Ella wants to be friends but her own problems cause difficulties for them both. Ella gradually becomes more and more obsessed with Charley with chilling results. There are violent scenes and erotic scenes within the same book and this bears no relation to the feel good factor from The Second Chance Shoe Shop. The book draws you in and at times is almost difficult to carry on reading as Ella's mental health declines and is reflected in some horrific behaviour. Despite all this I am sure this book is one I will read over and over

Excellent read. Have read all of Mels books now. Finished this one within 24 Hours. I love a good thriller, this was slightly different to my normal books (I don't read love/sex books!) but I still very much enjoyed it from the thriller side of it. I really like this author.

I've read most of Mel's books, but I think this one will stay with me for a long time. Ella was such a tragic character, and although I should have hated her, all I wanted to do was give her a big hug. Yes, there was sex involved, yes, there was violence involved, but neither were gratuitous - they were important to the story. Although I have no experience of schizophrenia, the conversations between Ella and Cassandra are exactly as I imagined the inner fight to be. Nice one Mel!

I'm torn between a 4 and 5 star rating..Mel Sherratt really is so readable, and this is a very gritty tale. Cassie/Ella is a great scary and damaged character. I'm not too sure about her conversations with herself but that might just be my lack of knowledge.I read this in no time..it's a great read.

Scary and full of suspense from the start.
Absolutely couldn't put it down Mel Sherratt at her best. Will certainly be recommending this book to anyone who enjoys a great psychological thriller.

This book was interesting and captivating, kept me reading and guessing to a certain extent. It reads easily, the characters are interesting but for me it was all a bit too predictable. Some commented that it was so gripping and slightly scary - now, I scare easily but I really didn't find it all that gripping and scary. I don't want to give away the story but want to make sure others like me, who scare easily, won't be discouraged by those comments. I think the book could have had more twists and turns but all in all, a good book which I enjoyed reading.

Fantastic page turner. Ella is A psychotic , nymphomaniac, neighbour from hell who has set her sights on the vulnerable Charley who moves into her house following her husband's death. We also get to see what has transformed Ella into the person she is and what horrors she has been through in her traumatic childhood and teenage years.
Highly recommended.
