Meandering with some nuggets buried deep inside
22 May 2019
This is an unusual business book, that is part autobiography (the first 25 pages or so just tell the story of Bill), part leadership/management theory and partly a history of Google (where many of the examples come from). I found it an interesting read, but it's not easy to quickly pull out the lessons and digest them. There's a catchy heading (e.g. "winning right"), followed by a story or example (often Google or sports-related) and then a short summary ("strive to win, but always win right with commitment, teamwork and integrity"). It's not a "how to" book and if you are looking to learn about leading people, there are better places to start. That's not to take anything away from Bill Campbell (the late coach that inspired the book), more an opinion on the way it has been written.
