I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Victory Girls onto my Kindle. I have loved the other books in Helen Carey's Lavender Road series and am delighted to say that this book is once again an amazing read. It has all the elements of the other books, wonderful characters, a gripping story line and great wartime detail. But it also has something else, a real sense of women rising to the occasion, showing courage and resilience in difficult and dangerous circumstances which I found both exciting and uplifting. There are lots of humorous touches too, and funny moments. I laughed, cried and once again I found I just couldn't stop reading. I devoured Victory Girls in one long night! Helen Carey really is a wonderful writer. The whole Lavender Road series is a tour de force.
I I have just finished the final book in the Lavender Road series, and silly though it may sound I felt quite sad as though I was saying goodbye to really close friends. Helen has an amazing ability to make fictional characters appear as real people, and I am sure she could write about them into their old age and still we would want more. Her research is so good it brings authenticity to the characters which in a small way I can relate to as I was a child of the war and went through the 3 night blitz on Swansea. My parents took in a few folk who trecked from Swansea to Mumbles out of the bombing, and those folk spoke as Helens characters and they were real, full of courage and the stiff upper lip of the British. These books are a series I know I will read every year and still be touched by the stories and their honesty.. Thsnk you Helen.
I thoroughly enjoyed the six Lavender Road novels and they kept me engrossed for many happy hours. I have re-read the all more than once Helen's research is impeccable particularly that relating to the activities of SOE In France. All the characters we finely drawn and it was interesting to follow them on their various journeys. The books made me realise how lucky we are and how much we owe to the bravery of men and women between 1939 - 1945.
Helen is a brilliant writer and I look forward very much indeed to her next book. I like many other people who have left reviews would love there to be a sequel to the six books. It would be interesting to find out what happened to everyone in the aftermath of war and the period of austerity that followed it. Did Helen and Andre move to France. What about Molly's ambition to become a doctor and did George get into a better school?
Having read all the Lavender Road books I was looking forward to reading this final one but couldn't see why it was £9.99 so when it was reduced I purchased it .Now I can see why it was the length of 3 books. I couldn't put it down and read it over 3 nights, a brilliant book and so sorry to say goodbye to all the characters
I am just half way through book 6 now. I have read the whole lot through the last week. I've thoroughly enjoyed the characters especially young George, who has had my in fits of giggles many times. The historical detail is excellent and so interesting. The story absolutely compelling. I am dreading the end of this last book but then my house is in disarray, l have a huge pile of ironing and the garden is getting quite rampant. Any chance of a book 7?
Another Brilliant story of the people in Lavender Road, the war is still happening across Europe, in 1942. Helen is still hoping for news of her Fiancé Andre, Molly is back in London & determined to find her Mother and why she was given up for adoption Jen is also back, and returned to her acting, & Henry. there is so much going on with all the people from the last story, each chapter will hold your interest. & you feel you know them all so well.
I thoroughly enjoyed the much anticipated last in the series and it more than lived up to expectations. The interwoven lives of all the characters are so cleverly drawn and the story lines are really gripping right up to the final pages. The girls' lives are embedded in fascinating historical detail and I almost felt I was a Lavender Road resident watching events unfold. I am now planning to start reading the whole series over again!
Have loved all the Lavender Book series, easy to read and understand, even to relate to....varied and interesting characters, great story lines for all the characters in these books. Easy to pick up on WW2 events with accuracy and empathy. Great author, would read any future books she writes......would thoroughly recommend all these books (in fact have read three of these books twice.)
Having enjoyed the previous books I was so pleased to read this one. It tied up all the loose ends but still provided a fabulous, believable story line which threaded its way through the whole book. I have loved the characters, good and bad. Helen Carey writes a great book, I have laughed, cried, sympathised and been angry! I am sorry the series is at an end.
I am so sad that I have finished the final book of the people in Lavender Road. From the first one I was immersed into the goings on and could not wait to get to the next. Thank you so much for writing this absorbing series.
