London Calling written by the very talented Helen Carey for me was a brilliant read which kept me gripped from page one as once again I acquaint myself with old friends and new from the previous three novels in this wonderful series. I knew I was in for a treat when I first received this wonderful book, I honestly did not realise how big a treat as Helen Carey has a gift of surprising her readers with storylines which gripped me, mixing historical facts with fiction throughout this book made London's Calling a total delight to read. I loved how she continued with the characters us readers previously met in the earlier books, Katie and her very handsome and brave husband Ward, Mollie, Joyce and her daughters and a few more along the way. Each of them had their own story to tell and I have to say they were so different from each other. I loved how the author showed the bravery of the Londoners but also she showed what daily life was like for them. What made this book special was how the author showed that even the most ordinary person could turn out to be the biggest hero of all, for me the hero within this book was Molly as she refuses to take no for an answer when her friend and old resident of Lavender Road Helen's life is in danger, this one decision will take Molly on her own adventures and for me I have to say I loved to read off her adventures and of course her heartache. This book for me was one I could not guess what was happening next, as Helen Carey and her wonderful gift of storytelling had me on the edge of my seat as with each page the reader was taken on a journey across the world following characters which were as different from chalk and cheese, yet each of them entertained me throughout. I am happy to recommend London Calling written by Helen Carey as a brilliant work of fiction which was threaded with historical facts, full of acts of bravery which showed the brave people of Britain as they stood up against Hitler in their daily lives.
Really enjoyed this book as I have all of Helen Carey's books. This was the latest in the Lavender Road series and although all were excellent I think this was the best. The characters were very real and this book covered many different situations. Helen has obviously carried out a lot of research for this book and I did not want it to end. It certainly gives you a good insight into what it was like living in London during the war, the attitudes of the people, their way of life and all the hardships amd together with a really interesting story I didn't want to put the book down. I am hoping there will be another book to follow in this series. That will make my day. I definitely recommend this book as a thorough good read.
Fantastic, one of the best wartime books I've read. I discovered Helen Carey recently so was lucky enough to read the first three books close together. I only had a short wait for the fourth and can't wait for the fifth. If you haven't read the other three I highly recommend them. This book has absolutely everything and despite its length I flew through it. From the struggles at home, to real danger abroad, we follow the characters we love through all sorts of challenges and triumphs. It's extremely well written, with enough factual information to bring the stories into context. Yet it's not heavy either, with moments of fun and light relief throughout. Can't sing it's praises enough, I loved it.
I loved this story. To me it brings back the family and friends atmosphere. When everyone knew everyone. If Jimmy was up to no good someone would see him and his parents would be told. Or on the other hand if anyone needed help there was always someone to help. I would recommend this lovely story to like minded people that love a good read and do not want all the unnecessary foul language and violence that has become . The norm
"London Calling" by Helen Carey is the latest book in her "Lavender Road" series. It was a great fun spending time with old friends. I loved the way that author the characters out their norm and make them great . "London Calling" is a must read for an fan of war time books
I read the first three books a few years back and was pleased when I again checked up on the Lavender Road novels again and found another book and it was well worth the wait . I re-read the first three books again and enjoyed them all over again and look forward to the next book which I've pre ordered . Very enjoyable reading recommend to readers who enjoy those type of books
Excellent book which arrived within two days of my ordering on ordinary delivery. One of a set, which I was anxious to get. I finished my previous book, just as the new one had been delivered. I couldn't have been more happy and am really pleased.
I'm not a regular reviewer but just had to post a review of London Calling as it has SO much to offer the reader. It really does have everything... thoroughly believable characters, compelling story lines, warmth and humour plus some real edge of the seat tension and excitement. With it's fascinating historical detail, brushes with famous characters and foray into occupied Europe it is SO much more than your average London based wartime family saga and will surely appeal to a much wider readership... It most certainly appealed to me! I found it impossible to put down but at the same time I just didn't want it to end... I can't wait for Helen Carey's next novel!
Follow on from the book Lavender Road. The lives of the people who are living just on the edge of London. Again plenty of readable war history withought getting bogged down. Plus plenty of humour to make you laugh and some that might even make you cry a little. I loved it
