I had purchased this book after having had the pleasure of seeing the French version of the film when on holidays. As most readers will know, the film is adorable and very funny, despite the basically tragic lifestory of Phillipe, the author of this book. I was aware that A Second Wind was not a film tie-in but still hadn't expected that I wouldn't be able to finish reading the book due to its subject matter. Like a previous reviewer said so eloquently, "the overall sense of the story is that of the author's internal pain". Entirely true and, though thoroughly understandable, it makes for an utterly depressive read. Phillipe's beautiful style of writing brings that pain so close to the reader, that sensitive characters or, indeed, those suffering from depression, should - in my opinion - think twice about reading the book. Like I said, I wasn't able to finish it without joining the author in the deep, emotional hole his condition had thrust him into, and a friend of mine who had also attempted to read the book, agreed with me on that.

Watched the film first and then read the book. Very moving and although desperately sad, Phillipe Pozzo di Borgo's insights gained from this most challenging disability, are also heartening and uplifting. This book stays with you.

True stories always seem to be the best and this was no exception. Firstly saw the film made from it but the book was better.
