It has got elements of War Horse about it, even though it's set in WW2, but it's still a very readable story. Although very predicatable for an adult, a child will read and enjoy this, getting wrapped up in the drama and emotion of the loss of Scout and life for Hero when he gets kidnapped. Perhaps not as good as Soldier Dog, but still worth reading

I bought this for our Daughters Christmas present and she was very pleased with it although she hasn't had time to read it yet. The introduction said it all for her and she is looking forward to settling down to read it.

If you have any knowledge about horses. Don't buy this book.
If you like horses, but know nothing whatsoever about keeping and riding, training horses. This will be average.

Bought this for my daughter who rarely reads for our holiday abroad. Found it quite amusing as she could not put the book down. So that says it all.

Very good story and for anyone who has had animals and horses in particular from an early age and built a raporte and friendship with, this will ring many bells. It is also gives an insight into the second world war movement of children to the country from the London and how in small communities prejudices are quickly raised but slowly put back in place. Excellent read.

Bought these for Christmas for my 10 yr old daughter. She enjoyed both books, but thought soldier dog was the best. A good introduction to the concepts of war. Made her laugh, cry and discuss them both.

A good way to educate children about the war and the role of horses in the mines. May be upsetting for a sensitive child.

Excellent read thoroughly recommended for the addicted horse lover. The story was a bit sad so have the tissues handy.
