Lovely illustrations, and a fun poem for little ones, but a bit disappointing really
on 27 January 2017
There were charming things about this book. The illustrations are great, there is a nice range of children included in the class, and the rhymes and vocabulary are fun. However, the fixation on spray cheese was very American and meaningless to my kids. There was little to distinguish the good natured but supposedly discouraging feedback that put her off engineering from the revolutionary encouraging feedback that spurred her on. The whole book felt a bit unsatisfying because the inventions were ridiculous and she never actually completed anything that was helpful or worked. That meant the ending was anticlimactic and the message to keep on trying was watered down.
After the brilliant reviews and the plaudits given I had thought that this would be an inspiring book for girls discovering the excitement of STEM professions and came away feeling that it was just a wacky poem spread over a picture book for young children and nothing extraordinary. I definitely think that it was pitched at younger or less able children than my seven year olds.
