This is one of the Hellboy novels, a great read featuring everyone's favorite key to the apocalypse, Hellboy and his team from the B.P.R.D.

Hellboy is summoned to the Vatican of all places to investigate a fire caused by angels in the Vatican library! But one document survives the holy fire, supposedly written by Jesus..... So why would angels want it destroyed? Nice bit of conspiracy theory there! Hellboy questions the unknown, then beats it into submission! Packed with gods, demons and mysterious sects. This fits in well with the Hellboy mythology and is better than some earlier novelisations. I like!

I approached this novel with some trepidation. Firstly, while I am a big fan of Hellboy as a character in Graphic Novels and the Hellboy movie, I am not so keen on "novelizations" as they seem a curious hybrid at best and usually a huge disappointment.

This is an exception, I enjoyed it immensely. With the vatican locations & lost artifact it starts off feeling like the Da Vinci code, with monstrous angels, but it is so much better than that, there is real power and pathos in the relationships of the characters, and a real sense of awe in the final scenes.

Terrific, highly reccommended to fans of Hellboy and anyone else who enjoys a good read.

It's a novel, don't fall fowl of thinking that it's written in a comic book format. That said, very enjoyable.
