OK - but not more than OK

I'm a bit disappointed by Killing Rachel. I really enjoyed Dead Time, the previous book in this series, and was interested in knowing how Joshua and Rose's search for their parents progressed. Sadly, while some new facts are uncovered in this book, there's too much focus on the much less interesting mystery of how Rose's old frienemy, Rachel Bliss, died. While Rachel was a fairly interesting character, I didn't care how she died - and I found the final resolution rather tame. The mystery felt incidental and a bit tedious when I was far more interested in the greater mystery of where Rose and Joshua's parents are. I'd prefer the books concentrated solely on that than having Rose and Joshua happen to solve another mystery on the side per book (suspends belief a little - what are the chances that they keep happening upon other mysteries).
Having said all this, I enjoyed the book overall, though I felt Dead Time was superior. Rose is an interesting character though Joshua is less well developed, and I certainly wouldn't avoid reading the next book based on my slight disappointment with this one.
